Thanks to all those involved over all these years, especially the ones who took the time to show me their own special way...

DJ Workshop

Information

These Advanced Location Lighting Workshops will be better enjoyed and utilized if you already have an understanding of the manual use of your camera’s shutter speed and f-stops.  The camera is just your box to catch your pictures with, lighting creates the image.

Other than needing a hot shoe (for the Pocket Wizards) and manual controls, there are no special camera requirements to instantly improve your pictures with better lighting.

DJ will continue to build lighting scenarios all day long.  Every time: evaluating the available light, setting the camera for the desired effects and adding or bouncing additional light back onto the subject to enhance them compared to their surroundings.

The 2011 Series of Workshops focus on what can be done with minimal equipment rather than build elaborate set-ups.  One Pack systems will be used to keep things simple and “real”  One or two Heads will be used and/or an on-camera flash.  If we “Strobist” (use the small flashes) we will use Lumedyne Cyclers to give us fast and numerous recycles and likely use light modifiers on those on-camera flashes too.

Everything is demonstrated live with professional models, this is not a slide show where DJ just brags about the famous people he has met or worked with. (Ok, maybe he’ll drop a few names…)  You will see the results instantly during the shooting and sometimes review them afterwards. (If we can stop shooting on time, since that’s the fun part)

Improved lighting is any effort made to effect the normal and create an image that a camera-button-operator cannot.  Since even cell phones often have a light or flash, moving the light off camera is the easiest way to “see” a difference in your images.  Next you’ll want to soften the light by making it larger and more diffused.  There are different effects produced by different techniques and there is a time and a place for all of them.  Knowing what the modifier will do to the light is the first key to selecting the right tools for each different assignment.

After DJ shows you how to work quickly and easily with the Lumedyne gear and what happens to the light with different modifiers, you are permitted to use the gear and shoot the models with your cameras and our flash systems.  Our models would love to get a great shot from each photographer along with their moderate payment.  Your shooting participation is voluntary and some elect instead to make notes or shoot scene set-up pictures rather than take turns making pictures of the models.

DJ shoots only a couple of images of each set-up and then proceeds on to other scenarios.  The point is to examine many possibilities to create great images, not spend ten minutes clicking away images.  Using professional models helps insure we get good images easily.  Using professional off camera lights insure that we will create dynamic dimensional images easily.  The rest is up to you.
